Gorgeous Views From St. Govan’s Chapel

It’s been a while since I went to St. Govan’s Chapel, so we took a little trip for a short walk and history lesson (thanks, Pembrokeshire Coast!).

Long, long ago, in the 5th or 6th century, there lived in Pembrokeshire a saint by the name of St Govan. Alas, one day when St Govan was walking along the south coast of the county, he was seen and pursued by a gang of bloodthirsty pirates.

Visit St. Govan’s Chapel

To get to the Chapel, follow the road until you reach a car park. The Chapel is on the right hand side, and below the rocks down some steep steps.

Surrounding Area

The area is mostly untouched, and although used as a military base, it shows where nature has taken it’s course. The cliff edges are so interesting and varied from the weather and waves.

To the left of the chapel is a cliff-edge walk. It’s great for climbers too, but should be avoided on windy days as it is quite open. It’s also worth being very aware of where you are stepping as you can peer right over the edge to a VERY long drop!

Things to consider…

There are a few caveats to being able to visit the area, but it is so worth it for the gorgeous views!

It is on an active military base. If you’ve never been before, the signs can be a bit daunting, but be assured, if the roads are open, there will be no firing or training. There is a timetable to help plan your visit around firing schedules. Just stick to the tracks and you’ll be fine!

There is a steep set of steps to get to the chapel that should be avoided on wet and windy days, as they can become slippery or difficult.

It’s also worth keeping note of the tide and avoiding high tide, as it does come up quite high and there can be large waves.
