After a few months of unemployment, I forgot how difficult blogging while working full time was!
Bit of a long one, but this is where I have been for the last couple of months…
As some of you may know, I have recently (okay, three months in) started a new job as a digital marketing executive for, surprisingly, a car park company! Q-Park in fact, in case you know it! It might not sound all that exciting to some, but I knew even before my first interview that this company was a little different and am so excited by it! I actually enjoy getting up in the mornings! Don’t get me wrong, I might not enjoy getting up at 6.15am when Winter really hits, but I look forward to work.
As part of my job, I have been to Manchester a few times, as well as Sheffield, and will be going to London this week. I’ve also been to Dublin a couple of times as we have an office based there, and even though my first trip was my first time there and I didn’t get to see much, it’s pretty cool that I got to stay in Ireland and have a little look around the city (while visiting many car parks – the glamour!) and get to know the journey a bit. I’ve been meaning to go for ages, and now that I know how easy it is from Leeds, I’m definitely planning a weekend there soon.
Each place I go to, I can be seen proudly photographing our car parks! I know I sound like a weirdo, but humour me here! Check out the Instagram account I created and tell me you know another car park that’s instagrammable!
I’m so happy to be in a job where I feel respected, and can actually put all of my skills to good use. It’s great working with more people and feeling part of a team, and a refreshing change to all of the small, independent companies I’ve worked for in the past. It does, however, mean having to look semi-decent each day, which I’m not sure I’m managing just yet!
To be fair, even if I hated it, I couldn’t say here as my new boss proudly announced my blog to everyone at work – wahh! No more secret blog for me! Probably a good thing as it’s about time I came out. I’m actually glad I don’t have to hide it at work and that people at least say they’re impressed. They’re really supportive, even giving all of my followers 10% off Q-Park car parks with code TEA10 (I don’t get paid for the link, btw, just sharing to be nice). I feel like I can be myself in this job – as long as I remain professional! – which is amazing.
You may also have noticed, although probably not, that I’ve been a bit rubbish at this whole blogging thing. I honestly don’t remember how I used to get any blogging done when working full time. Or even when unemployed thinking about it. Once one thing backs up, like taking pictures, everything else does. It’s so hard to spend some time on here rather than do the million other things I have going on. It feels like I have no time, but I definitely do.
While a new job obviously takes some getting used to, and I am out most of the day now, I have regular working hours, and despite travelling a bit for work, definitely have the evenings free, but seem to have lost the ability to balance the blog and the rest of my life. I go out a lot after work for coffee or food or events or catch ups – this is both the upside and downside of working in the city centre! I’m also super busy at home, with it still not quite being decorated. By quite, I mean we actually haven’t done much at all. On top of all this, I decided it was the perfect time to get a kitten! I’ve never had one before, but wow she takes up time and energy! Meet Luna!
I have been thinking about how to spend enough time on the blog without it affecting anything else and have decided that if I want to keep it going in the way I was, that I need to be a bit more strict with myself. I’m too easy on myself and because it’s a hobby, it seems less important than other things, but actually, it is really important to me and has been a big part of the last few years. It has opened opportunities for me, taught me loads, helped me meet amazing people in a new town, and given me somewhere to relax and blurt out all of my thoughts. I need to stop neglecting the blog, as it’s almost like neglecting myself (deep moment, lemme have it!). Everything I love is here on my site and while this probably sounds a bit silly to some, it means a lot to me. It’s something I’ve worked on for years and as someone who doesn’t stick to hobbies too well, I’m impressed I’m still here. This blog definitely helped me when getting a job involving content as well, so a proud moment there!
From now on, I’ll be making sure I spend more time on here and getting my posts out, getting on top of reviews, and keeping up with my fave bloggers! I’m also going to start a monthly newsletter in order to hold myself more accountable! The first one will hopefully be this month and will include my monthly advertisers, stories, things I love, current affairs opinions and anything shorter than a blog post, but longer than a tweet! Sign up at the bottom of the page if you’d like to receive it!
When I’m not here, you can usually see what I’m up to most days on Instagram Stories – there’s always something going on, and if not, there’s a cute kitten!
Side note to those who email me; I’m trying to switch providers because my emails are so on and off at the moment, it’s a joke. I am also very sorry to any PRs that I have been on/off messaging and how poor I have been to work with. I can change!
I will also be sharing blog posts that really should have been in the last couple of months to show you what I’ve been up to as some of it is too good to not share. Thanks to anybody who still reads this for sticking with me!
