TV: RuPaul’s Drag Race

Tonight, I finally watched RuPaul’s Drag Race. After much nagging from Netflix and persuasion from a friend, I thought it was about time I checked it out. I always knew it was a programme for me, but never got around to starting.

I’ve started from the first episode available, which is Season 2, Episode 1.

I did think it would be a bit too showy for me, and some parts, as with any reality/competition show were cringey as hell, but I really liked it!

The first thing that surprised me is how convincing these people are. It amazes me that I’m too lazy to stick some foundation on, and am not at all skilled with make up, yet these guys slap it on like pros. While it might be a bit heavy for daily use, they are artists!

I think people mistake what these people do and think about it n a sexualised way, but they really are skilled professionals and so impressive.

I do have one question though: Do drag queens have to learn to sew? Is that the deal? Put on a wig and sew your heart out? They all seemed to take to the sewing machines pretty easily (I’m sure there was some behind-the-scenes help, but still!). I can only assume it is because dresses etc are not necessarily made to fit their shape, and because they add bits of padding in here and there.

I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did. I have to admit that I thought the emphasis would be on the showy attitudes of these ladies (and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of that) and not their drag skills – I am yet to learn what these are! I want to see what else these ‘bitches’ can do (I think that’s drag terminology right there!)

I’m probably a bit addicted to it now.

My friend suggested for me to watch Drag Race. I was quite similar to you in thinking that I knew I’d like it but was a little sceptical. I am now obsessed and addicted. Seriously loved how invested I got with each queen and the stories as well as it being fun. 🙂 x
